Steps for Passport Renewal in 2022 and beyond

If your passport is 10 years old or older (assuming you obtained it when you were 16 years old), or you’ve changed your name, it’s time to renew. Some countries may refuse you entry if you have less than six months left on your passport before it expires. Before you travel, you should renew your document.

The good news is that this procedure is far more user-friendly than starting a new passport application from scratch. But, before you get too excited about a cheaper, quicker, and faster process, you should be aware of who can and cannot use an expedited passport renewal route. If your passport was lost or damaged, it was issued when you were under the age of 16, you changed your name but don’t have the documents to prove it, or it’s been more than 15 years since you received it, you’ll need to apply for a passport renewal online. The good news is that you don’t have to visit a passport office to meet the renewal requirements.

Simply follow these steps to renew your passport by mail:

  • Fill out the form:

Fill out Form DS-82: Mail-In Application for a U.S. Passport.

  • Bring along your current passport:

One that meets the above-mentioned requirements, as well as the completed form, one passport photo (unbent and stapled to the application), and the applicable fee. Choose a large enough envelope that none of the contents must be bent to fit. For name changes and other requests, additional documents are required, and fees may vary depending on the circumstances.

  • Send it in the mail!

Please think about your other international travel plans before renewal of passport. You won’t be able to travel until a new passport is issued.

You now understand everything you need to know about applying for or renewing your US passport. Obtaining this critical travel document is a relatively stress-free process with enough time and organisation. And once you have your passport, the world is your place.
